30/5/98

Arts Minister Peter Foss today announced the outcomes of the April round of ArtsWA investments.

Eighty seven applications representing a total investment of $734,585 were recommended for State Government support by ArtsWA's three assessment panels:

Aboriginal Arts Panel                         $165,200        (20 applications supported)

Young People & the Arts Panel          $74,385          (17 applications supported)

Arts Development Panel                     $495,000        (50 applications supported)

"I continue to be delighted by the range and geographic diversity of the arts activity supported by ArtsWA's panels, particularly given that ArtsWA's regional and community arts funds have been devolved to Country Arts WA and the Community Arts Network," Mr Foss said

"Both of these agencies have established their own programs of support with the devolved funds, distributing a total of $825,000 annually.

"With the across-artform and state-wide focus each ArtsWA panel now has, we're seeing a funding landscape that is less Perth-dominated," Mr Foss said.

"While the majority of our arts practitioners and organisations are Perth-based, there is a discernible broadening of agendas, with regional, national and international outcomes frequently the objective."

A significant number of the applications supported by the three panels involve the research and development of new arts products and services.

"The future health and vitality of our arts scene is dependent on well-resourced R&D activity," Mr Foss said.

"I'm pleased that the panels are providing good support towards R&D proposals that have been clearly articulated and have every chance of providing quality outcomes for the people of Western Australia."

ArtsWA's panels will meet again in July and November to make recommendations on a further $1,071,500 in funds.
