Tribute to former WA Premier John Tonkin

Premier Richard Court has expressed deep regret at the passing of former Premier of Western Australia John Tonkin.

Mr Court said Mr Tonkin had been held in high regard by the WA community and had made a significant contribution to the State.

"Mr Tonkin had a distinguished public career, which began with his election to State Parliament in 1933 and included his time as Premier from October 1971 to April 1974," Mr Court said.

"He had a particular interest in improving the State's education system - highlighted by the fact that he held the education portfolio in four different governments."

Mr Court expressed his deepest sympathy on behalf of all Western Australians to Mr Tonkin's family.
