Two community groups that have benefited hundreds of people in the Wanneroo area were commended by Family and Children's Services Minister, Rhonda Parker, and Joondalup MLA, Chris Baker, during a visit last week.

The Minister was visiting the Joondalup electorate at the invitation of Mr Baker.

"The Granny Spiers Community House at Heathridge and the Wanneroo Accommodation Support Services at Beldon are two organisations that show the huge benefits that come from Government and the community working together," Mrs Parker said.

"Both organisations receive funding from Family and Children's Services and provide services at a grassroots level through volunteer committees."

Granny Spiers was established 18 years ago and offers support to families, individuals, seniors and community groups as well as providing a financial counselling service.

Wanneroo Accommodation Support Services has been operating for 13 years and provides youth accommodation as well as a drug education service, job placement and training program. Last year 55 young people were assisted over a six month period.

Mr Baker said though the two programs received substantial Government funding there is always a need for new programs in the area.

"I'm pleased the Minster was able to inspect these two programs first hand and her comments showed she has an understanding of the issues affecting the northern suburbs."

Mr Baker also called on the City of Joondalup, which owns the Granny Spiers Community House at Heathridge, to repair the roof of the building and contribute towards the cost of repainting the interior.
