Mandurah will be at the leading edge of tertiary education in regional Western Australia with the construction of a joint university-TAFE campus.

The master plan for the Peel Regional Campus was unveiled today by Education, Employment and Training Minister Norman Moore during a ceremony at the Mandurah City Council.

"The master plan projects development of the joint Murdoch University and TAFE facility for the next 25 years," Mr Moore said.

"Ultimately, the campus will offer a full range of tertiary award courses to serve the needs of students and local industry, from TAFE certificate to advanced university research degrees.

"Murdoch University and TAFE will work closely with the community, industry and business in the region to ensure that the Peel Campus provides an effective and accessible service."

Credit transfer arrangements would mean students could move across easily between TAFE and Murdoch courses.

Located on a 40-hectare site in Gordon Road, the campus will be the centre of an educational complex linked electronically to satellite centres in key towns such as Pinjarra.

The campus layout incorporates individual identities for Peel TAFE and Murdoch University.  However, joint facilities such as the library, common teaching areas and student services will form the central core of the campus.

Construction of stage one, a $5.7 million facility primarily for TAFE, will begin next month.  Student enrolments will start in July next year.

Mr Moore said the Peel Campus was a major boost to post-compulsory education in the region and he was proud to be associated with such an innovative project.

The master plan will go on display in the Mandurah Civic Centre following its unveiling.
