Unveiling of special cab for wheelchair-confined people
30/11/94
Transport Minister Eric Charlton today unveiled Perth's first 'Flash Cab', designed specifically to cater for wheelchair confined people.
The vehicle, a modified Ford Falcon station wagon, allows for easy access by people in wheelchairs and has the benefits of a conventional vehicle.
Wide, low ramp access enables people to wheel themselves into the vehicle easily.
Taxi operator Mr Paul Williams has been issued a multi-purpose taxi licence to operate the Flash Cab on a trial basis.
Mr Charlton said the trial would continue until early next year.
He said one had operated successfully in Mandurah for a number of years and Flash Cabs were common in other States.
As with Perth's 21 other MPTs, Mr Charlton said the Flash Cab would be available for other taxi services if not required by people confined to wheelchairs.
