Upgrading of Munjina airstrip in the Pilbara completed
15/3/96
The upgrading of Munjina Airstrip, adjacent to the Auski Tourist Village in the Pilbara, has been completed.
Transport Minister Eric Charlton said the improvement of the airstrip was in line with the Government's strategy to enhance the quality of airstrips in country areas.
The design work and installation of navigational aids was organised by the Department of Transport and construction coordinated by Main Roads Pilbara.
Mr Charlton said the completion of the upgrade had been urgent in order to meet the Government's objective of providing an airstrip to meet local community needs following the closure of the Wittenoom airstrip.
"The Munjina Airstrip is 1,320 metres long and 45 metres wide and constructed to a standard which will accommodate light to medium-size aircraft and planes used by the Royal Flying Doctor Service with emergency night lighting provided," the Minister said.
"Last night the lights were trialled for a Royal Flying Doctor Service aircraft from Port Hedland and the operation was described as a complete success."
Mr Charlton said the strip was for public use and in accordance with Commonwealth civil aviation regulations pilots would need to satisfy themselves that the airstrip was adequate for their intended use at the time. Maximum aircraft weight capacity being 5,700 kilograms.
The Department of Transport is developing plans for the ongoing maintenance and responsibility for the airstrip and general information on the strip's condition is available by contacting the Auski Tourist Village (091 766 988).
