Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore today announced the appointment of the Board of the Western Australian Athletics Federation.

Mr Moore said the six-person board would be headed by chairman Rod Chambers, the current president of the WA branch of the Australian Track and Field Coaches' Association.

Also on the board was 1980 Olympic Silver Medallist Rick Mitchell, who had recently moved to Perth.

Other members were lawyer Richard Hooker, Australian Institute of Management executive Patrick Cullen; educationalist Meredith Bolt, and former WA middle distance runner Dr Duncan Sullivan.

Mr Moore said the appointments were made by his predecessor Doug Shave.

"However, I am now delighted to announce the appointment of such a well qualified group which I feel confident will revitalise the sport of athletics in Western Australia," the Minister said.

"We have a strong tradition in athletics and the potential to continue to produce athletes of international standard.  I feel sure that Athletics West, under the direction of the board of the WA Athletics Foundation, will unite to have a stimulating effect on athletics in this State."
