A Western Australian software company has won two major contracts to supply a sophisticated information system to hospitals in Malaysia.

Working Systems Pty Ltd, of Perth, will install the Chiron hospital information system at the Assunta Hospital, Malaysia's oldest private hospital, Commerce and Trade Minister Hendy Cowan announced in Kuala Lumpur today.

Mr Cowan also announced that Working Systems had signed a contract with Gleneagles Intan Medical Centre, another leading private hospital in Malaysia, for its hospital information system at its new hospital in Kuala Lumpur.

"I am delighted to be able to announce these two projects," Mr Cowan said.

"The agreements are an example of technology exchange which benefits both regions, and of the sort of high-value exports which our information-technology sector can generate."

Mr Cowan is in Malaysia as part of the State Government's 'Insight into Western Australia' promotion this week.

The contracts follow an initial visit to Malaysia by Working Systems in 1993, in a trade mission co-ordinated by Western Australia's Department of Commerce and Trade.

As a result of the first visit, the company won its first Malaysian contract, valued at $1 million, to introduce its Chiron system into the Ampang Puteri Hospital, flagship hospital of Malaysia's biggest hospital group.

This contract, involving Malaysian business partner XYBASE. It was won with significant support from the State Government's trade office in Kuala Lumpur.

The new contracts bring the value of Working Systems' sales in the region to more than $3 million.

"Chiron is a very sophisticated database application," Mr Cowan said today.  "We believe it would be ideal for installation in other hospitals throughout South-East Asia which are working to meet the demand for effective, efficient and quality health services."

Mr Mathew Cherian, managing director of Working Systems, said the Chiron modules being installed included the Patient Management System, Pharmacy, Order Entry/Results Reporting, and the Harmony Financial and Supply Modules developed in conjunction with the Health Department of Western Australia.

Nearly 40 Western Australian companies are taking part in 'Insight into Western Australia'.  The organisations, ranging from environmental consultants to food processors and hospital planners, will be focussing on the State's services industries.

This event follows last year's highly successful 'Western Australia Week in Kuala Lumpur'.
