WA hosting the eighth FINA World Swimming Championships
8/1/98
Local officials are reaping the benefit of Western Australia being the host for the eighth FINA World Swimming Championships.
Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore made the point when he opened a seminar for sports officials at the Australian Institute of Management in Floreat where world experts were the keynote speakers.
Carol Zaleski, chairperson of the FINA Technical Swimming Committee, from Pennsylvania, and committee members Woon Sui Kut, from Singapore, and G L (Flip) Filipelli, from Vancouver, told local officials how to improve their work and make more impact on their chosen sport.
Mr Moore said it was a rare privilege to have such a high standard of speakers.
"The Ministry of Sport and Recreation and the Organising Committee of the eighth World Swimming Championships deserve congratulations for their efforts in making this day possible," he said.
"Such an opportunity is yet another positive spin-off from WA hosting events such as the eighth FINA World Swimming Championships.
"The State reaps enormous financial rewards, with an estimated economic impact of over $35 million, and is exposed to a television audience of a staggering two billion people worldwide.
"These are all positive benefits and the chance for local officials to get advice from experts of the calibre of today's speakers is yet another bonus for WA."
