Western Australia will join a national initiative allowing users of the Taxi User Subsidy Scheme to enjoy discounted taxi travel when interstate.
The Taxi User Subsidy Scheme (TUSS) allows people with disabilities access to discounted taxi travel. Under the new reciprocal arrangements, the discount will be extended to cover taxi travel in all States and Territories.
Transport Minister Murray Criddle said the decision was good news for members of the TUSS.
"The Australian Council on Disability had previously identified this issue as a priority for people with disabilities," Mr Criddle said.
"Furthermore, the Federal Government House of Representatives' Standing Committee on Family and Community Affairs released a report early this year which supported Taxi User Subsidy Scheme reciprocity between States and Territories," he said.
Under the reciprocal scheme, members will be issued an 'Interstate Taxi Subsidy Voucher' in a standard format for easy recognition by taxi operators all over Australia. The vouchers will be issued to existing TUSS members as required.
Mr Criddle said it was particularly pleasing to see a national approach to the issue.
"My colleagues in other States were unanimous in their support for the idea," he said.
