Companies supplying the Western Australian resources sector should benefit from anticipated global economic improvement, Mines Minister George Cash said today.

Mr Cash said economic conditions were expected to improve throughout the rest of this year and even stronger growth had been forecast into 1995.

The Minister delivered this message while opening WAMEX'94, the sixth annual trade exhibition of mining and engineering equipment in WA.

"Suppliers are strategically involved in a thriving industry that has a world-class reputation in exploration science, mining techniques, metallurgy, refining and smelting," Mr Cash said.

"Our wealth of natural resources will continue to provide opportunities for economic growth well into the future.  During the next few years, thousands of millions of dollars will be invested in the State's export-based resources sector."

However, Mr Cash warned that to remain competitive, WA's mining industry and the companies supplying it had to maintain and increase a leading role in the market place.

"We must continue to invest and develop new products and technologies to meet the challenges which will continue to rise from an ever-changing world," he said.

"Working harder and smarter are definitely the keys to our State's continuing success."

Mr Cash said that during the past five years WA's economy had grown faster than any other in Australia, primarily because of the resource sector's contribution.

"Annual production from mining and petroleum industries exceeds $12,000 million and the sector directly employs 35,000 people as well as providing jobs in support industries for another 100,000.

"In fact, one in six WA workers owe their livelihood to our resources sector which produces more than 70 per cent of the State's export income."

Mr Cash applauded the role of trade fairs saying WAMEX provided a showcase for the world's best mining equipment.

"Through this exhibition, manufacturers and suppliers, mining companies and consultants are able to look at the latest ways to improve their planning, operating efficiency and safety," he said.

About 12,000 people visit WAMEX each year, and it is regarded as the premier event of its type for the mining industry in WA.

The Department of Minerals and Energy (DOME) has displayed its products and services at WAMEX for the past five years.

This year DOME's Explosives and Dangerous Goods, Mining Operations and Petroleum Divisions are combining to promote the department's commitment to worker and public safety.

Entries from the most recent awards for environmental excellence and the department's annual photographic competition are also on display.
