Sport and Recreation Minister Norman Moore said today that Mr Wally Foreman had been re-appointed as director of the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS).

Mr Moore said State Cabinet had approved Mr Foreman's appointment after the position was advertised State-wide and nationally.

The WAIS developed programs for the improvement of Western Australian athletic performance at the elite level and would be crucial for the State's preparation of competitors for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, and the Year 2000 Games in Sydney.

Mr Foreman had previously held the director's position for 9 1/2 years, and the results achieved during this period had been outstanding.

"Wally is held in high regard by a wide spectrum of the sporting community, and his re-appointment came after a unanimous decision by the selection panel that he was the best person for the job," the Minister said.

"The position will have extra prominence as WA's elite athletes focus on winning the right to compete in the next two Olympic Games."
