A warning about problems associated with the so-called millennium bug was issued to computer consumers and traders today.

Fair Trading Minister Doug Shave said people who were considering buying, or upgrading, computer hardware or software needed to make sure the products would not be affected by the bug.

Mr Shave said people must be aware there may be problems with computers with the approach of the year 2000, with some people already experiencing difficulties.

"The problems result from the way in which many computers store dates causing confusion and leaving the computers unable to read data correctly," he said.

"This is likely to be important where the computers are used for date sensitive work."

Mr Shave said many people used computer-based equipment in their home such as roller doors, security systems and air conditioners which could all be susceptible to this bug.

"If buyers are not sure about the impact of the year 2000 on what they are considering buying, then they should ask the trader," Mr Shave said.

"Traders who mislead consumers about the capacity of computer hardware or software which they are selling to cope with the year 2000 risk prosecution under the Fair Trading Act or Trade Practices Act.

"Consumers and businesses who already have computers may need to contact the manufacturers to determine whether those systems can cope with the year 2000.

Mr Shave also warned consumers to be cautious when hiring people to correct year 2000 problems, or buying software marketed as 'Year 2000-proof'.

"There is considerable potential for unqualified operators to enter the market for providing solutions to the year 2000 problem," he said.

"These operators are liable to the same penalties as traders who mislead consumers. The maximum fine is $100,000."

Nationally, the Ministerial Council on Consumer Affairs is developing a series of strategies to assist consumers and businesses to deal with the year 2000 issue. It expects to make its recommendations public soon.
