Deputy Premier Hendy Cowan has warned all computer users operating on Windows 95 and Windows 98 software not to turn on their computers today because of the risk of a computer virus.

Mr Cowan said the virus, which activates on the 26th day of the month, could damage or destroy computer operating systems.

The virus, known as W23CIH Spacefiller, could affect systems which access e-mail or the Internet or have been loaded with corrupted disks.

Executive director of the Office of Information and Communications Stephen Collins said the virus, which was detected in some Government operating systems last night, could be de-activated by keying in the following code: www.pspl.com/download/cleancih.htm and then downloading the virus removal software.

This action should be taken immediately after accessing the Internet.

However, users are advised not to attempt this procedure until after September 26.

Mr Collins said the virus had been detected in 700 personal computers at the Education Department and prompt action had been taken to alert all emergency service providers, including police and hospitals.

The virus had been detected by a routine virus scan.

People wanting to find out more about the virus and what action should be taken to combat it can phone the following numbers: 08 9327 5464 or 9327 5940.

Mr Collins stressed that computer users should exercise caution, although people with home computers not linked to the Internet or e-mail were unlikely to be affected to the same extent as other users. However, people who had used external disks could be subject to the virus.
