Broome is one step closer to having a major tourism facility developed on the racecourse.

Lands Minister Doug Shave said in Broome today the State Government would seek expressions of interest in September for redevelopment of the racecourse and adjoining land for tourism purposes.

"It is proposed that the racecourse will be relocated and the Department of Land Administration, in consultation with the shire, the Broome Turf Club and the Aboriginal community, will identify a preferred site for a new racecourse," Mr Shave said.

He said that in recent years there had been a number of redevelopment proposals for the site which covered about 120ha, five kilometres from Broome.

"The racecourse, on Gantheaume Point, has huge tourism potential, with views and easy access to Cable and Riddell Beaches," the Minister said.

"The right development would further enhance Broome as one of Western Australia's premier regional tourist destinations for Australian and international travellers.

"The racecourse and adjoining land offer the opportunity to develop a world-class resort offering a range of accommodation."

Mr Shave said the Coalition Government was aware of the need to carefully consider the environmental, heritage and cultural aspects of any proposal.

"These concerns must be negotiated and accommodated in a sensitive manner," he said.

"A site for the development will be identified through a thorough consultation process with the Aboriginal people, the Shire of Broome and State Government agencies."

Development conditions will include financing of the relocation of the racecourse, development of an Aboriginal theme for the tourism facility and the involvement of the Aboriginal community in all planning stages.

Mr Shave said he expected the Government to be in a position to select a preferred developer towards the end of this year.
