Winners of the 1999 West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra Scholarship announced
6/9/99
Arts Minister Peter Foss announced the winners of the 1999 West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra Scholarship at a presentation at Higgins Hyde Park Hotel tonight.
Claire McGowan and Matt Willis were joint winners of the scholarship, which was introduced in 1995 by Mr Foss to acknowledge and encourage outstanding young musicians in the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra Association.
"The intention of the scholarship is to enable recipients to further their education by accessing opportunities not available locally, or to assist with the purchase of an instrument necessary to further the musician's career," Mr Foss said.
"WAYJO continues to do a tremendous job in supporting young musicians and in promoting jazz in general.
"It has given its members the opportunity to work with some of the world's most distinguished jazz artists including Ray Charles, Don Burrows, James Morrison, Dale Barlow and Andrew Firth.
"The field of applicants for the scholarship was so strong this year that it was impossible for the musical director of WAYJO to limit the prize to one winner."
Claire McGowan, a tuba player who is currently studying toward a Bachelor of Music at the University of Western Australia, has performed with a number of Western Australian orchestras in addition to the WAYJO Concert Orchestra.
Matt Willis is currently studying bass guitar at the WA Conservatorium of Music. Matt performs regularly around Perth and hopes to travel overseas once he completes his studies.
ArtsWA provided the $2,500 scholarship.
Mr Foss paid tribute to all the members of the WAYJO Band who contribute to a vibrant and extremely active association.
"WAYJO is recognised nationally and internationally as a leading example of the best of today's youth. The work of this association ensures that WA has one of the most vibrant, creative and visible jazz communities in Australia," the Minister said.
