Arts Minister Peter Foss this evening announced the winners of the Western Australian Music Industry Association(WAM) WA Song Contest at the Burswood Casino Ballroom.
Mr Foss said the contest had grown since its inception in 1990 from 200 entries to a record 892 entries received last year.
"It has become one of the most prestigious song contests on the songwriter calender with each winner receiving $1,000 cash and a day's free recording for their song," he said.
"When the WA Song Contest began in 1990 there were just four categories. This has now expanded to 12 categories which include spiritual, children's, world and instrumental. There are also planned theme categories such as cars and millennium, which songwriters will address specifically in their compositions."
Other categories include folk, Aboriginal, jazz, blues, pop, country and rock.
The Minister also thanked the contributing organisations, including the Office of Youth Affairs, for their support in 1998 and announced that ArtsWA had recently confirmed funding towards the operation of WAM for 1999.
"The WA Song Contest is a perfect example of what can be achieved by the collaborative support of both the private and public sectors," Mr Foss said.
"Similarly, it provides an ideal platform for musicians and bands to showcase their talents and gain experience within the music industry.
"I congratulate the musicians who took part in the competition this year and for their originality."
