Premier Richard Court says young Western Australian yachtsman David Dicks is an inspiration and a shining example of the resilience and determination that characterises the people of WA.

Mr Court said David's epic solo circumnavigation had captured the imagination of not only the people of the State, but of those throughout the nation and in countries around the world.

"David is a very brave young man and his extraordinary feats are what adventure books are made of," the Premier said.

"While David exemplifies the spirit of WA, he has done something beyond the capacity of most ordinary people.

"He has covered some 12,000 nautical miles of ocean, battled huge seas, experienced bitterly cold temperatures and had to deal with equipment problems.

"He faced almost 300 days and nights of loneliness and isolation which would test the nerves, the temperament and character of a trained astronaut, let alone a 17-year-old.

"He has confronted all these challenges and has returned to Fremantle an inspirational young man."

Mr Court said Western Australians would have another chance to pay tribute to David at a street parade in Perth next Thursday.

"I urge as many people as possible to attend and acknowledge the feats of this remarkable young man," the Premier said.

"David is an inspiration in an age where youth are often unfortunately given prominence, not so much for their achievements, but for the negative actions of a few.

"I look forward to next Thursday's parade - a day that I am sure will be remembered as 'David Dicks Day'."
