Thanks to savings made through the competitive tendering process in the State Government's $800 million Infill Sewerage Program, more York residents will be free of septic tank problems this winter.
Water Resources Minister Dr Kim Hames said changes to the program had enabled the corporation to bring the project forward by 18 months.
Work will extend reticulated sewerage connection to 49 properties bounded by Balladong Street, the railway line, Wheeler Street and Avon Terrace.
"Originally we had planned to offer connection in late 2001, but we're delighted to be able to advance the work so these residents won't have to endure another winter of blocked and overflowing septic tanks," Dr Hames said.
"Heavy soil conditions in York have always prevented septic tanks from operating efficiently.
"Now more householders will be able to enjoy the same sort of benefits reticulated sewerage has already brought to the town centre."
Experienced Infill Sewerage Program contractor Prestige Civil Contractors Pty Ltd has been awarded the construction contract for the $675,000 project.
Dr Hames said construction work was scheduled to be completed by June.
"While it is relatively short notice, we hope residents in the project area will be able to make the connection as soon as the opportunity is offered," he said.
"The benefits of a hassle-free sewerage system, which has virtually no maintenance costs, will more than outweigh the initial cost of connection."
