Conditional approval for parking restrictions at Subiaco Oval
28/2/95
Local Government Minister Paul Omodei has approved in principle a proposal by the Subiaco City Council for parking restrictions to address problems faced by residents when football matches are played at Subiaco Oval.
Mr Omodei said the council had proposed setting aside 20 per cent of kerbside parking within one kilometre of Subiaco Oval for residents-only parking.
Special vehicle permits would be made available for residents and their visitors, with football patrons excluded from parking in the reserved areas.
Mr Omodei said parking was a long-standing and frustrating problem for Subiaco residents on match days and it was important that a compromise was reached. The council had worked with the WA Football Commission in preparing its plan.
"I understand a survey of residents showed overwhelming support for the reserved parking proposal, with 86 per cent of those who responded to the council survey voting in favour of the new scheme," he said.
Mr Omodei said the council would have to submit an amendment to its current parking by-laws before he could provide formal approval for the scheme. The council had been advised of this requirement.
The Minister said the Cambridge Town Council had also submitted a reserved parking proposal and this was currently under consideration.
