Transport Minister Eric Charlton has announced a contract to duplicate the Ranford Road Bridge over the railway at Canning Vale which will greatly improve traffic safety in the area.

Mr Charlton said the contract, worth more than $1.5 million, had been awarded to Barclay Mowlem and would take about 20 months to complete.

"The bridge will alleviate current congestion by allowing two lanes of traffic instead of oneand cater for the future Fremantle-to-Rockingham passenger railway line," he said.

Mr Charlton said the new double span bridge would be built alongside the existing single span structure over the railway line and incorporate pedestrian access in both directions.

It would add a further section of dual carriageway to Ranford Road, improving general access in the area.

The local member for Southern River, Monica Holmes, has applauded construction of the new bridge.

"The project will improve travel times for more than 20,000 motorists using Ranford Road each day as well as eliminating the frustrating delays caused by the the single lane," she said.

The City of Canning will carry out roadworks associated with the bridge after is is completed.
