Opening of Currambine railway station next month

Currambine Station - the last on the new northern suburbs rail line - will be opened to the public next month.

Also from next month, rail users in the northern suburbs will be able to take advantage of a new Whitfords to Fremantle service on Sundays.

Transport Minister Eric Charlton announced today that the $2.9 million Currambine station would be officially opened on August 8.

Mr Charlton said the opening would represent the final phase of the construction of the $277 million rail link.

"The station will provide both Fastrak rail services and Traklink bus services to people living in Perth's most northern suburbs of Quinns Rock, Mindarie Keys, Kinross, Clarkson and Burns Beach," he said.

Mr Charlton said the station opening would also ease kerb-side parking problems around the Joondalup station.

"The Currambine station will initially provide parking for up to 400 cars, which will eventually be increased to 800 car parking bays," Mr Charlton said.

He said that in the next few weeks, Transperth would distribute about 8,000 brochures to residents in suburbs surrounding the station informing them of the services that would be available once it was opened.

Mr Charlton said a new Fastrak through-service from Whitford station to Fremantle on Sundays, would also commence from August 8.

"The service will give passengers a 30-minute ride from Whitfords to Fremantle, which will compare more than favourably with the motor car," the Minister said.

"The new service will provide a further incentive for people to leave their cars at home because they will not have to change trains at Perth Central."

Mr Charlton said the service would also increase weekend patronage on the Perth to Fremantle line.
