The State Government's commitment to equipping hospitals with the latest medical technology continued today with the unveiling of a state-of-the-art digital X-ray machine at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
Health Minister Bob Kucera said the $1million digital X-ray machine would deliver a number of benefits to patients, including more accurate diagnosis, faster results and greater comfort.
The X-ray machine is based in the Radiology Department and can be used in the examination of patients with a range of conditions, including liver, pancreatic, vascular and arthritic disease.
"The Government is committed to reviewing and upgrading medical imaging facilities and services across the metropolitan area," Mr Kucera said.
"This new machine will capture images in digital form - not film - and can perform a wide range of special procedures and general examinations."
The digital X-ray images are displayed on viewing monitors and can also be accessed by doctors on their personal computers.
Mr Kucera said the purchase of the machine formed part of the State Government's plan to upgrade both Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and its facilities.
Last week, the Minister unveiled a $600,000 gamma camera for use in the hospital's Nuclear Medicine Department.
Royal Perth Hospital and Fremantle Hospital already have modern million-dollar digital X-ray machines similar to the one now operating at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
