A $19.9million civil works contract will see completion of the second and final stage of Mandurah Ocean Marina.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the contract awarded to Western Australian company Works Infrastructure Pty Ltd surpassed the previous biggest LandCorp contract of $13.8million for construction of North Harbour, the first stage at the marina.
Ms MacTiernan said the marina would create hundreds of jobs and stimulate hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity in the Peel region.
"This much-needed tourism and recreation infrastructure will generate about $900million in economic activity over a 20-year period," she said.
"Research by Curtin University's Institute for Research into International Competitiveness has also forecast Mandurah Ocean Marina will create about 50 jobs during the construction phase, up to 600 as private sector building takes place and more than 300 permanent jobs.
"All land in the North Harbour has now been sold, development of residential and commercial projects are well under way and businesses have started to set up.
"The start of construction on Stage Two, or the South Harbour, will provide a further boost to this already successful project, which has brought together the community, City of Mandurah, the Peel Development Commission, local business and the public sector.
"South Harbour project will feature an innovative Venetian Waterways theme that will group residences, shops and businesses and includes a 40-unit chalet park aimed at the family market.
"It will be a unique landmark for Mandurah that links between the marina and the town's cultural and central business precincts."
Ms MacTiernan said the contract included construction of waterways, earthworks, road works, services, landscaping, a swimming beach and street lighting with the initial lots expected to be available during spring 2003.
It would involve the dewatering of the remaining southern section of the marina, which would continue for up to six months.
