The State Government has committed $23 million over the next four years to upgrade five key stations on Perth's passenger rail network.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the Building Better Train Stations program would mean major improvements to stations at Armadale, Bassendean, Gosnells, Kelmscott and Midland.
"The Government will work with local communities to make their railway stations focal points and catalysts for revitalising their town centres," Ms MacTiernan said.
"More attractive and safer railway stations, with better access to town centres will not only encourage people to use our train services, they can also bring new customers to local businesses."
The Minister announced a $5.5 million upgrade of the Bassendean Station, due for completion in 2003, as part of the Building Better Train Stations program.
"In Bassendean for example the new station will support the Town Council's efforts to attract people and businesses to the Old Perth Road precinct," she said.
"Railway patrons and the local community will be invited to help design the new station.
"Together we can make Bassendean a desirable destination."
Ms MacTiernan said the Building Better Train Stations program fulfilled an important part of the Government's election commitment to better integrated transport infrastructure.
