The vision, tenacity and commitment of the people of the Narrogin district received high praise from Agriculture Minister Kim Chance today, when he officially opened the region's new $8million Regional Recreational Complex.
"To be able to plan, build and ultimately manage this complex is tangible proof that country people have the ability and the 'get up and go' to set standards and work together to build something that will give generations of people from this region wonderful lifestyles," Mr Chance said.
He said the project, which had taken nearly eight years from its inception to reach today's opening, was a joint venture between the Town and Shire of Narrogin and the Shire of Cuballing.
The State Government contributed $2million through the Community Sport and Recreational Facility Funding Scheme, with $2.25 million from the Town of Narrogin, $450,000 from the Shire of Narrogin, $300,000 from the Shire of Cuballing.
Other financial support came from the Department of Community Development (Family and Children's Services), which provided $250,000 toward the cost of a family meeting room, outdoor play area and office; the WA Lotteries Commission, $100,000; and the Wheatbelt Development Commission, $5,000. Other funding would come from community-based fundraising by farmers.
The complex includes an eight-lane, 25m pool, a giant whirlpool, squash courts, two indoor netball courts, a gymnasium, three indoor multi-purpose courts, a cr?che and playground and a world-class Astroturf hockey pitch.
Mr Chance said the facilities would more than adequately cater for the Department of Sport and Recreation's country sport enrichment scheme, that has worked so successfully in bringing top sportsmen and women, as well as coaches, to rural Australia.
'With these facilities I can see the sporting tradition strengthen and even more outstanding sportsmen and women come out of the Great Southern," the Minister said.
"However, what is even more important is the complex will provide opportunities for not only a whole range of sporting activities but recreational activities as well, including the elderly and those who need rehabilitation therapy."
