Two developments in the twentieth century have been responsible for helping to reduce the isolation of Western Australia and to help the tyranny of distance, the Minister responsible for the Centenary of Federation, Tom Stephens said today.
With Federation in 1901, a loose association of self-interested states became a nation and the development of aviation in the early decades of the century helped to cement together the disparate pieces of this young country.
Mr Stephens commended Western Australians on their enthusiasm and participation in a wide range of community projects undertaken during Centenary of Federation celebrations.
"The range of initiatives being undertaken to celebrate the Centenary is truly remarkable, communities throughout the state have built rotundas, restored heritage buildings, created church kneelers, and have organised festivals and created heritage trails - the list is practically endless," Mr Stephens said.
Joining the list of innovative projects is a book titled 'The Cockpit and the Spanner'. Published by the Maylands Historical Society, the book chronicles the rich history of aviation in Western Australia.
The Cockpit and the Spanner's was written by Mr Frank Colquhoun. Beginning work as an apprentice mechanic for the fledgling state aviation company WA Airways in 1923, Mr Colquhoun took over 500 photographs during his many years in aviation, and many of these historic images illustrate his book.
The publishing of the 'The Cockpit and the Spanner' has been assisted by a grant from the 2001 Community Centenary Project of the Centenary of Federation State Committee Western Australia. Two hundred and one communities throughout the state have shared $3.5 million, committed by the State Government to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Federation.
"'The Cockpit and the Spanner' will help remind the community of the vital role aviation has played in the development of Western Australia," Mr Stephens said.
"It is a very fitting addition to the myriad worthwhile projects undertaken to celebrate the hundred years since Federation."
