The team behind the innovative housing development at Dalyellup Beach Estate was recently recognised at the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) 2001 Awards for Excellence.
Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens said the UDIA's Judging Panel was impressed with the use of the natural undulation and beauty of the landform to create villages separated by lineal parks - and 'a true village in the forest by the sea'. The award was in the category of residential development greater than 250 lots.
Dalyellup Beach Estate is a joint venture of the Department of Housing and Works' Landstart branch and the Home Satterley Dalyellup Company.
"This award stems from the fact that good planning and the provision of social infrastructure from the outset has resulted in a healthy young community rather than just a subdivision of new houses," Mr Stephens said.
Although the development is only minutes from Bunbury, 100ha of tuart forest separate it from the urban centre. This natural bushland, combined with water features and excellent presentation, plus the fact that Dalyellup is within walking distance to the best beach in the Bunbury area, has resulted in 550 lots being sold since sales started in October 1999.
"I understand that this is outstanding for a country development," Mr Stephens said.
"The community infrastructure which has been put in place must play a significant role in the development's success.
"With a community development officer and numerous open spaces, barbecues, recreation areas, walking and bike trails and an oval, Dalyellup Beach is well on the way to becoming a strong community.
"Dalyellup Beach's open spaces are so appealing that many Bunbury residents are visiting for recreational outings."
Mr Stephens congratulated Landstart and Home Satterley Dalyellup on receiving a well-deserved award for creating this leading edge development.
