2003 WA Landcare Awards finalists announced
9/9/03
The finalists for this year's State Landcare Awards have been announced.
Agriculture Minister Kim Chance said the prestigious biennial awards recognised individuals, farmers, community groups and school students who devoted time and energy to look after the environment.
Mr Chance said landcare and natural resource management was the key to ensuring the sustainability of our agricultural resources and the long-term viability of agribusiness.
"The Landcare Awards recognise individuals and groups who work to battle against land and water degradation in order to protect and sustain our environment," he said.
"Sixty-two nominations were received this year and a specialist judging panel has narrowed the field to 25 organisations and community groups from across the State."
This year there are a total of 15 award categories. There are five Western Australian categories, which recognise projects on salinity, water resources, marine and coastal stewardship, landcare and tree farming.
In addition to these, there are 10 national award categories. The winners of these categories at a State level will then become finalists for the National Landcare Awards in 2004.
The State winners will be announced on October 9 as part of the State Landcare Conference in Katanning.
