50 new jobs to be created in Harvey
5/7/04
The Gallop Government will provide $688,000 in financial assistance to create up to 50 new jobs in Harvey.
The assistance will be used to relocate and expand the operations of JLV Industries, a Western Australian company that manufactures, installs and maintains cable hauled conveyor systems for BHP Billiton's Worsley alumina operations. JLV Industries also export their products to countries including Jamaica, Israel, the Philippines, South Africa, the USA and Canada.
Announcing the funding in Harvey today, Premier Geoff Gallop said the Government was committed to creating jobs and opportunities for all Western Australians.
"The Gallop Government is committed to ensuring that WA's strong economic performance creates new jobs and opportunities throughout the State," Dr Gallop said.
"Strong international demand for WA's natural resources is creating jobs in industries that service our major resource operations and it is pleasing to see that JLV Industries sought to relocate to Harvey because their Perth premises had become too small.
"It also makes sense for JLV Industries to be located close to their largest customer, Worsley Alumina."
Collie MLA Mick Murray said the relocation of JLV Industries to Harvey was a huge win for the region.
"The economic benefits of new industry cannot be measured solely by the number of people employed directly by the project," Mr Murray said.
"The new people employed are likely to invest and spend locally, which will see new jobs and opportunities created in other industries as well.
"I thank the Premier for his announcement today and his ongoing commitment to the South-West. I also thank State Development Minister Clive Brown and South-West Minister Bob Kucera, for their efforts in facilitating the relocation of JLV Industries to Harvey."
The funding will be provided through the Department of Industry and Resources' South-West Industry Assistance Scheme ($188,000) and from land sales by the South-West Development Commission ($500,000).
The relocation of JLV Industries will see up to 30 full-time jobs transferred from Perth to Harvey, with up to 20 new jobs generated by JLV Industries' purchase of a fibreglass boat builder, which it intends to co-locate with its other manufacturing operations on the Harvey site.
