Affordable makeover magic for seniors thanks to new discount directory

A 65-year-old pensioner today revamped her style with a personal makeover of hair, make-up and wardrobe, thanks to a popular Western Australian seniors' discount program.
Kensington woman Valerie Barrett experienced makeover magic as part of the launch today of the WA Senior's Card Discount Directory 2004-2006.
Seniors Minister Sheila McHale said the makeover was made possible by business discounts offered by the WA Senior's Card program and co-ordinated by the Office for Seniors' Interests and Volunteering.
"There are nearly 217,000 Senior's Card holders in WA - nearly 73 per cent of all seniors - who will use the new directory as a guide to State Government concessions and business discounts," Ms McHale said.
"Armed with the guide and a Senior's Card, eligible seniors can save nearly $1,400 each year through State Government concessions alone. In addition, card holders can also take advantage of generous discounts and offers from 630 businesses around the State."
The Minister said the discounted goods, services and attractions on offer ranged from essentials including mobility aids, automotive repairs and home security, through to treats such as restaurants, travel and holiday tours.
"Savings made through the Senior's Card program can add to the disposable income of seniors and allow them to spend a little more on themselves or those things important to them," she said.
"Importantly, the program also encourages seniors to embrace the concept of 'active ageing' by getting out into the community and enjoying recreational activities at a reduced price."
Ms McHale said Ms Barrett was a worthy candidate for the glamorous makeover.
"Valerie is a grandmother of two and tireless community volunteer at her local church, St Martins-in-the-Fields, Kensington, where she volunteers in the op-shop, does outreach work and helps with much-needed fundraising to repair the church's roof," she said.
"Typical of many active seniors, she doesn't often take time out for herself but is an avid Senior's Card user, who makes the most out of the Government concessions and private discounts on offer in the directory."
The Minister said that for the first time, the discount directory would also be available online, with users able to search the website by suburb, business name and/or category to find details of the regularly updated discounts and offers available.
To be eligible for a Senior's Card, a person must be 60 years or older, a permanent resident of WA and not working more than 20 hours a week. It is estimated that a further 33,000 seniors are now eligible for a Senior's Card but have not yet signed up.
