Improvements to Augusta's airstrip means that it can now handle day and night flights by Royal Flying Doctor Service in most weather conditions.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today opened the airstrip, which has been redeveloped to meet Flying Doctor safety requirements.
Ms MacTiernan said the improvements, partly funded by the State Government, included clearing and re-grading the runway shoulders, widening and resealing the runway and re-sealing the apron and taxiway.
She said this complemented work already done by the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, the Augusta Aero Club and the Leeuwin Lions Club to redevelop the airstrip.
"This airstrip is a perfect example of governments and the community working together for everyone's benefit," the Minister said.
"Access to emergency medical flights is important for local people, as the alternative can be a four-hour road journey to Perth compared with a flight of less than one hour.
"Previously, the Flying Doctor could only land during the day and in favourable weather conditions.
"Better access by air will also boost Augusta's tourism industry as landing and taking off will be safer and easier for other light aircraft including charter flights."
The improvements, costing more than $160,000, were completed with a $120,470 grant from the State Government through the Regional Airports Development Scheme.
In previous years, the scheme has contributed $6,000 for pilot activated lighting and helped fund a master plan to guide future capital works.
