Western Australian architect Michael Broderick is the winner of the Architects' Board of WA's 2002 Award, Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens has announced.
Attending an official awards ceremony last evening, Mr Stephens said Mr Broderick had built a strong working relationship with Government and institutional clients, particularly in the educational area.
"Mr Broderick has been generous with his time and professional knowledge and as a result has been a great architectural educator for the profession," the Minister said.
"He has contributed to the profession by serving on both the Architects' Board and the Architects' Accreditation Council of Australia.
"His reputation and experience has seen him appointed as school architect to seven prominent private schools including John 23rd, Corpus Christi and Aranmore Colleges, as well as a significant number of Government schools."
Mr Stephens said the Architects' Board Award had been presented annually since 1982, and the list of recipients since that time were the luminaries of the architectural profession of WA.
The intention of the award was to recognise WA registered architects whose attitudes and personal contributions to the profession and the community had enhanced public confidence in the standing of the profession.
The Minister advised those attending the award ceremony that the State Government was aiming to implement the recommendations of the Review of the Architects Act by June this year to meet the National Competition Policy deadline.
He said the Government had clear priorities in the areas of sustainability, built environment and industry reform and architects would play an important role in delivering those priorities to the community.
"The Department of Housing and Works is developing the building industry component of the 'State Sustainability Strategy', including the issues of green design principles, energy efficient design, environmental impact of building materials and innovative housing strategies," Mr Stephens said.
"The department, with assistance from the Building and Construction Advisory Council, is also preparing built environment policy statements."
Industry reforms being addressed include Code of Practice, the Architects Act and Security of Payment.
Mr Stephens commended the initiative of the Architects' Board of WA in recognising a high achiever in their industry.
