Austal Ships land purchase
5/3/02
Western Australian shipbuilder Austal Ships has acquired key waterfront land at Henderson from the State Government in a move expected to boost jobs and exports.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today that Austal had purchased a 3.6ha lot for $2.69million from LandCorp and secured a two-year option on an adjacent 3.5ha lot.
Austal Ships' managing director, Mr Bob McKinnon, said the acquisition was a significant step in the implementation of the Austal's growth strategy.
"This ensures that we will have sufficient waterfront land to substantially increase the size of our operations," Mr McKinnon said.
"Austal is a major employer and exporter, so this is excellent news for WA," Ms MacTiernan said.
"It shows the State's shipbuilding industry is bouncing back after a flat period."
Both lots are next to Austal's existing facilities and were created as part of LandCorp's Northern Harbour development on Jervoise Bay.
