The arrival of Qantas flight 1076 into Broome today was a positive sign that regular and improved air services to the region was a high priority for Qantas, Minister for the Kimberley Tom Stephens said today.
"The first B737 jet to arrive into Broome heralds the commencement of a daily service that will complement the BAE 146 flights currently servicing the town," Mr Stephens said.
"A second 737 service will also operate on Saturdays and Sundays.
"Today is a significant day for the community and the tourism industry who have worked hard to secure additional air capacity."
In November last year, the Minister co-ordinated a fact-finding visit to the region for senior Qantas officials to gain a greater understanding of the potential of the region and its unique needs.
"I am pleased that today we see the results of that visit," Mr Stephens said.
"The development of an effective working partnership between Government, the community and industry has delivered and bolstered air service capacity to the North."
The commencement of daily B737s into Broome is part of an improved air service schedule into the North-West. In addition to B146 flights to Karratha and Kalgoorlie, 737 jet services now service Karratha 12 times a week and effective February 11, Kalgoorlie will also have 12 737 jet services a week.
"It is anticipated that additional air services will provide greater access to reduced fares and holiday packages and the incentive to get more people back into the region to spend their tourism dollar," Mr Stephens said.
"The tourism industry can now rise to the challenge of guaranteed flights to Broome and this will generate a greater confidence and optimism amongst the community and industry.
"Qantas have advised me that they are actively working on the Eastern States markets to promote Broome.
"If we can source a greater share of this huge market, the economic benefits will be significant."
Mr Stephens welcomed Qantas' commitment to the regions and encouraged all Western Australians to consider visiting the North-West for their holiday destination before travelling to the East or overseas.
