Hon. Alan Carpenter

For the first time since the Beazley Medal was introduced in 1984, the Curriculum Council has awarded two medals - one to the top Tertiary Entrance Examinations (TEE) student and one to the top vocational education and training (VET) student.
The winner of the Beazley Medal: TEE, is Antony Moser, of Hale School, and the winner of the Beazley Medal: VET is Bianca Batten, of Forrestfield Senior High School.
Acting Education Minister Bob Kucera said the Curriculum Council's decision to change the name of the Excellence in Vocational Studies Award, which was introduced last year, to the Beazley Award: VET reflected the growing importance of vocational studies in the curriculum in years 11 and 12.
The change was made with the approval of Kim Beazley Snr, the former Federal Education Minister, after whom the medals are named.
"Over the past five years, the number of students pursuing vocationally oriented studies, including structured workplace learning and VET studies, has steadily increased," Mr Kucera said.
"Most VET students graduate from year 12 with significant progress towards a nationally recognised training qualification and the courses are increasingly rigorous."
Beazley Medal: TEE winner Antony Moser, 17, who had a Curriculum Council award score of 97.92, sat six TEE subjects (English Literature, German, Physics, Chemistry, Applicable Mathematics and Calculus).
The Curriculum Council award score is based on a student's performance in five TEE subjects, with at least two subjects from each of the humanities and maths/science TEE study areas.
Antony was also awarded the Subject Exhibition in German, Certificates of Distinction in English Literature, Chemistry and Physics and a Certificate of Excellence. He was one of six Hale School students to achieve a General Exhibition.
Outside school Antony is interested in karate, flying and reading in German and French.
He was the State karate champion for his age/weight in 2000 and 2001, and gained third place in a national championship last year. He is half-way to obtaining a full private pilot's licence and has completed his first solo flight.
Antony intends to study commerce and law at the University of Western Australia this year.
Bianca, 17, undertook 498 hours of VET studies in years 11 and 12 in the two industry areas of business and clerical, and hospitality and tourism.
She achieved the Subject Exhibition in Aspects of the Tourism Industry, a Certificate of Excellence, and Certificates of Distinction in Aspects of the Tourism Industry and Structured Workplace Learning - Business and Clerical.
Bianca completed a traineeship during years 11 and 12 at the Department of Land Administration. The traineeship included two days' work a week at the department and assessment at the workplace.
She is currently working full-time at the department and has applied to Perth Central TAFE to do Certificate 3 in tourism.
Bianca hopes to have a career in the tourism industry. She says she has always had a passion for travel and tourism, and has consistently made choices at school that would lead her to a career in that area.
General Exhibitions were fairly evenly spread between boys and girls with 22 boys gaining awards. Girls received 14 of the 26 of TEE Subject Exhibitions and 12 of the 19 wholly school-assessed Subject Exhibitions.
The top female TEE student was Ying Hui Hong, of Rossmoyne Senior High School, who was ranked third in the State.
Nicole Birch, of Bunbury Catholic College, was the top student from a country school, and the only student attending a country school to gain a General Exhibition.
Hale School's five other General Exhibition winners were Nader Ruhayel, who was second; Siong-Horng Lim; Peter McNamara; Theofanis Xydis; and Nicholas Heaney.
Other schools with more than one General Exhibition winner were Rossmoyne Senior High School (five), Methodist Ladies' College and Perth College (both four), Christ Church Grammar School and St Mary's Anglican Girls' School (both three), and Churchlands Senior High School, Trinity College and Wesley College (all two).
John Curtin College of the Arts students picked up Subject Exhibitions in Drama Studies (Peta Reynolds) and Dance Studies (Shannon Riggs).
All awards and exhibitions will be presented at the Curriculum Council Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, February 26, 2002 at Murdoch University.
