A new jetty costing $146,800 will be constructed on the Canning River at Shelley, allowing boat users to tie up in the deep waters and walk into shore, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today.
Ms MacTiernan said the State Government's Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme would provide a $73,400 grant towards the construction.
"The new jetty will provide a much-needed facility for recreational boaters using the Canning River," she said.
"The Shelley foreshore is a popular spot for families to relax, with barbecue facilities, public toilets and attractive parkland.
"With the construction of the jetty - due to start almost immediately - boat users will also be able to come into shore, have a barbecue and enjoy the facilities before moving on."
Riverton MLA Tony McRae said the State Government's contribution to the project would be matched dollar-for-dollar by the City of Canning.
"Our river foreshore is one of our greatest assets and it provides fantastic recreational opportunities for local residents," Mr McRae said.
"The new jetty will make this area even more accessible for local residents and visitors."
Ms MacTiernan said the RBFS grants, worth $573,000 this financial year, had been allocated to 17 projects across the State, from Derby in the north to Denmark in the south.
"Grants range from $2,225 for the installation of lighting at the boat ramp on the foreshore at Denham to $122,500 for the upgrade of the Kwinana Beach Ramp in the Town of Kwinana," she said.
"The RBFS was established to improve recreational boating facilities across Western Australia and has been very successful in fostering partnerships between the State Government and local authorities.
"Boating enthusiasts also play a role as the scheme is directly funded from boat registration fees."
Grants are made on a dollar-for-dollar basis to local governments and other local authorities for projects that enhance leisure opportunities, tourism and boating safety.
Ms MacTiernan said the growing popularity of boating in WA had increased demand for the provision of infrastructure and improvements to existing facilities.
"Through the RBFS, the Government is able to provide improved facilities for the State's boating community," she said.
