Booklet provides information on disability allowances and benefits

A newly updated booklet outlining State and Commonwealth allowances and benefits could help people with disabilities and their families and carers receive assistance to which they may be entitled.
Disability Services Minister Sheila McHale said the Financial Assistance and Benefits Guide, produced by the Disability Services Commission, provided a comprehensive summary of options such as pensions, benefits and other practical help for people with disabilities and their carers.
Ms McHale said an estimated 355,500 Western Australians had disabilities, with a further 200,000 people - almost one in 10 of the population - providing care and support. Many managed on their own without assistance from formal services through Government and non-Government agencies.
"Family and friends are the backbone of our care system and while there are many excellent support agencies providing assistance, it is likely that a considerable number of people are coping on their own, unaware that support and other benefits could be available to them," Ms McHale said.
"People who care for family and friends with disabilities do a remarkable job, but they in turn need practical support to help them continue with their caring role.
"We must make every effort to ensure people with disabilities and their families and carers receive all they are entitled to, and this booklet will go a long way to alerting them to these entitlements."
