Tireless efforts from a community in Western Australia's Great Southern have been rewarded today with the opening of the new $1.1million Borden Pavilion in the Shire of Gnowangerup.
In Borden to officially open the sports pavilion, Sport and Recreation Minister Alan Carpenter said the Borden community had been planning the pavilion for seven years and congratulated local residents for their dedication to the project.
"The new pavilion is a multi-purpose venue and will be a boon for sport in the shire," Mr Carpenter said.
"In the past, the lack of amenities in Borden have impacted on the town's ability to host large sporting events.
"The new pavilion will see Borden better able to cater for large crowds, and to attract more sporting teams from neighbouring towns.
"The pavilion will provide Borden with the opportunity to host sporting events from around the region including football, netball and hockey.
"In addition, it will provide the town with a much wider array of recreational activities, which will also assist in their endeavours to increase membership."
Under the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF) the State Government contributed $374,000 towards costs, in order to ensure the future recreational needs of the region. Other funding sources include:

  • Lotteries Commission of Western Australia - $250,000,
  • the Shire of Gnowangerup - $250,000; and
  • the Borden community - $248,000 including $50,000 worth of volunteer labour and donated goods and services.
"The State Government applauds both the Shire of Gnowangerup and the Borden community's sense of civic pride and love of sport, which has been displayed through their commitment to the project and their extremely generous charitable contributions," Mr Carpenter said.
The Minister said the project was an excellent example of how the provision of quality infrastructure through the CSRFF could increase physical participation levels.
"The provision of a cr?che in the pavilion has for the first time made organised sport more accessible to women in Borden," he said.
The pavilion also contains:
  • a Hall of Fame;
  • a function room that will seat 250 people.
  • a meeting hall that seats 50 people;
  • commercial kitchen;
  • changing and umpire rooms;
  • dedicated medical rooms; and
  • a gymnasium.
