Six outstanding TAFEWA lecturers have been awarded scholarships totalling more than $100,000, Education and Training Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich announced today.
Ms Ravlich said the scholarships would help lecturers develop innovative and exciting ways to help teach apprentices and trainees.
"The scholarships range from improving literacy skills among building apprentices and developing a new traineeship in aviation to fast-tracking apprentices in the automotive and hospitality industries," she said.
"I congratulate all the lecturers for taking the opportunity to develop and trial new and creative teaching practices in their colleges."
The recipients are:
Dennis Baker, from Swan TAFE, was awarded $19,956 to develop a training delivery model for a new traineeship in aviation ground operations. The model, in consultation with the Transport and Distribution Industry Training Council, will be trialled in areas where employers have little or no previous experience in employing a trainee.
Gordon Bates and Hans Borg, from Swan TAFE, were jointly awarded $18,576 to develop and implement a communications strategy and a guide to promote language and literacy support for building trades apprentices.
Jim Sattin, from Swan TAFE, was awarded $18,249 to look at ways of supporting the introduction of the Fast Track Apprenticeship initiative for the Western Australian automotive industry. Fast Track has been successful in other industries to train tradespeople in a shorter time to help alleviate the skills shortage.
Garry Michels, from Swan TAFE's Balga Campus, was awarded $18,013 to develop a flexible delivery model to train people in the furniture making industry.
Michael Snadden, from Challenger TAFE, was awarded $17,031 to examine ways of introducing the Fast Track Apprenticeship initiative into the hospitality industry.
Jack Burgess, from Challenger TAFE, will receive $15,700 to develop a resource kit for the Certificate III in Information Technology traineeship.
Ms Ravlich said the Gallop Government was committed to addressing the skills shortages in key industries.
"Recently Premier Geoff Gallop announced a wide-ranging action plan for key WA industries," she said.
"This includes the creation of a skills formation taskforce which is looking at ways to fast-track apprenticeships in major industries without compromising quality."
