Brighter future predicted for Langford

The suburb of Langford has been cited as another New Living success story through an award-winning urban renewal program of the Department of Housing and Works.
At a ceremony to unveil a large mural created by Langford youth, Housing and Works Minister Nick Griffiths said the New Living Program had been successful in rejuvenating run-down areas where there is a high level of public housing.
"The program is changing the face of public housing by reducing high concentrations of public housing, providing opportunities for Homeswest tenants to purchase their homes, encouraging more private homebuyers into the area and revitalising communities through redevelopment," Mr Griffiths said.
The Minister said the median house price in Langford had increased by 24.7 per cent in the past financial year and vacant lots had risen in value by approximately 45 per cent.
"The increase in values is a reflection of public confidence in the future of the area," he said.
Boogurlarri Community House drew strong praise from the Minister for its many worthwhile programs, including courses for Youth Groups.
"About 65 young people, whose average age is 14, are enrolled in the program," he said.
"Many members of the group are indigenous and some have disabilities or are disadvantaged."
The youth group promoted racial harmony and mutual respect through the interaction and participation of young people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
The urban art mural project was an opportunity to involve a group of about 20 10 to18-year-olds in a large scale, hands-on undertaking.
Under the guidance of an experienced artist, young people planned the mural and prepared preliminary sketches before producing the final artwork.
"As well as learning the value of taking a considered approach to a large project, the tangible results of their efforts will remain a source of pride to participants for years to come," Mr Griffiths said.
"Community art projects such as this help to strengthen the social fabric and build strong and happy communities."
