Approval for the release of much-needed residential land in Broome was announced today by Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan.
Ms MacTiernan today announced that the Western Australian Planning Commission had approved a LandCorp subdivision application to provide 345 homes at Cable Beach, Broome.
"Broome's growth has been exceptional over the past years and demand for residential development has grown significantly," the Minister said.
"Land prices have until recently been increasing very rapidly - this land release will help keep blocks affordable.
"The release by LandCorp of Januburu-Six Seasons Estate shows how Native Title issues can be successfully resolved if you bring goodwill and commitment to the table."
The Kimberley Land Council welcomed the approval.
"The project will see a substantial area of land released for development, while ensuring significant cultural areas such as Kennedy Hill are preserved and maintained by the traditional owners," KLC executive director Wayne Bergmann said.
Ms MacTiernan said LandCorp expected to release 61 lots in Stage One of the Januburu-Six Seasons Estate to Broome residents in late December, with subdivisional work completed ready for housing construction in February 2006.
"Engineering design works are expected to be completed by mid-August and LandCorp will tender for the civil works contract with commencement of this phase expected in mid-September," she said.
The Minister said development meant that the Gallop Government's commitment to fund the construction of Gubinge Road, a major connection for heavy vehicles to the Broome Port, could now progress.
"The funds generated by the land sales will ensure Gubinge Road is completed all the way to the port," she said.
Detailed design work will be completed by the end of the year, with tenders called in early 2006. Weather permitting, the project should be completed by October.
LandCorp will fund the cost of the road's construction adjacent to the subdivision, while part proceeds of LandCorp's land purchase will meet the remainder of the road's construction.
Kimberley MLA Carol Martin welcomed the subdivision approval.
"This development will benefit the whole community and building Gubinge Road will get trucks out of the centre of town," Mrs Martin said.
"Broome is a place on the move and the Gallop Government is committed to ensure the town has the housing and infrastructure to keep pace with this growth.
"We are building stronger regional communities and ensuring the Kimberley receives its fair share by investing in important projects such as the Januburu-Six Seasons Estate and Gubinge Road upgrade."
