Bunbury's Marlston Hill project a major economic plus
18/1/02
Bunbury's Marlston Hill urban development project will generate economic activity worth more than $330million according to independent university research.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the project had also resulted in more than 200 construction jobs and at least a further 75-80 ongoing jobs.
Ms MacTiernan was commenting on a study into the economic impact of Marlston Hill by Curtin University's Institute for Research into International Competitiveness (IRIC).
"This represents an excellent return from a Government investment of $27.5million in the project," she said.
"It also provides a useful indication of the economic benefits that could be achieved in redevelopment projects, such as Midland and Armadale and projects in regional centres such as Mandurah and Geraldton.
"This is in addition to the social and environmental benefits, such as happier, healthier communities, that accrue from this type of project."
Marlston Hill combines a mix of residential, tourism, commercial and entertainment areas on former industrial land at the northern end of Bunbury's CBD.
It was carried out by the State Government's land development agency, LandCorp.
Ms MacTiernan said Marlston Hill had proved popular with homebuyers, businesses and investors and helped revitalise the city centre.
"This project was accomplished with strong community input and co-operation between LandCorp and other Government agencies, the City of Bunbury, South-West Development Commission and local business," she said.
"It is an excellent example of what this type of development can do for a local community.
"It is also important that revitalisation projects like Marlston Hill work together with established industrial and transport activities such as Bunbury Port in strengthening regional economies."
