Traffic flows on Gilmore Avenue, Kwinana will improve next year with the installation of kerbside bus lanes between Wellard Road and Dalrymple Drive.
Announcing the project today, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the lanes would improve traffic safety and bus operations on Gilmore Avenue.
"The installation of bus lanes will provide safer turning at intersections, pedestrian refuges and reduced congestion," Ms MacTiernan said.
"It will also give a better run for Transperth buses, and so make the local bus services more efficient.
"The bus lanes will be designed in such a way that will allow them to be modified in years to come to provide a separate, dedicated busway as demand increases.
"This will form part of the future Rockingham to Fremantle Transitway."
The $800,000 project is a joint undertaking by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure (DPI), the Town of Kwinana and Main Roads WA.
"The Town of Kwinana has been very keen to improve general traffic safety along Gilmore Avenue particularly between Wellard Road and Dalrymple Drive, and coincidentally DPI was seeking ways to improve Transperth bus operations in the same section of road," Ms MacTiernan said.
The Minister went on to say there had been an excellent level of co-operation between DPI, Main Roads WA and the Town of Kwinana in bringing this project to fruition.
"The kerbside bus lanes concept has already proven successful on Hampton Road in South Fremantle, with buses and cars moving far more smoothly," Ms MacTiernan said.
"I expect a similar level of success with Gilmore Avenue."
Construction works will commence at Kwinana in January 2003 and the bus lanes are expected to be in use from April 2003.
