Pilbara Minister Tom Stephens has invited the Commonwealth Government to join the State Government, Pilbara local governments and resources companies in improving the quality of life for Pilbara residents.
Speaking after the opening of a new iron ore mine at Eastern Range near Paraburdoo, Mr Stephens said the time was right for a partnership to transform the Pilbara as it entered a new period of development.
"Massive new investment and development is under way and it is causing enormous pressure on the ageing social infrastructure throughout the region," he said.
"This growth will produce huge benefits for the Commonwealth, as well as the State Government and resource companies.
"Together we have an exciting opportunity to rebuild community facilities and infrastructure and provide better services as the basis for sustainable Pilbara communities.
"The aim would be to make living in the region a matter of preference for people who work in the resources sector and also to generate new opportunities in tourism, aquaculture, horticulture and other industries."
Mr Stephens said a Federal initiative, similar to the $12million Sustainable Regions Fund it had provided to the Kimberley, would be a major support to existing efforts to improve services and infrastructure.
