Carnarvon boat launching facility project moves ahead
7/5/04
Carnarvon's new boat launching facility project is moving ahead with the State Government releasing preliminary concept plans.
Visiting Carnarvon today, Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the $300,000 facility would ensure boat owners in the Gascoyne had continued access to a first-class boat launching facility.
Ms MacTiernan said the construction of the new $2.75million wharf at Carnarvon Boat Harbour provided an opportunity to improve the launching facilities available to recreational boat owners in the region.
"The decision to relocate the existing launch facility was based on a need to ease congestion and overcrowding at the increasingly busy fishing boat harbour," she said.
"The wharf, together with the new launching facility to be relocated adjacent to the existing yacht club marina, would allow for the growth and development of the harbour and provide boat owners with an upgraded boat ramp and associated jetties.
"This project is a very positive outcome for recreational users and commercial operators."
A Shire of Carnarvon-appointed community committee examined a shortlist of three possible sites and identified the site near the yacht club as the best location.
Discussions with the yacht club to determine the exact site position will continue.
The concept plans for the boat launching facility include a two-lane boat ramp with dual finger jetties and associated infrastructure including a trailer parking area.
The State Government, through its successful Recreational Boating Facilities Scheme (RBFS), administered by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure, has granted $150,000 to the Shire of Carnarvon for the new launching facility.
The department has also agreed to manage the construction project for the shire.
Shire representatives were presented with the concept plans for the new facility this week.
"Once complete, the new launching facility will be a significant asset benefiting not only the local boating community but the many boating enthusiasts that visit the region each year," the Minister said.
The facility is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
