Carnarvon refuge nearly complete
1/11/02
A women's refuge that will provide short-term crisis accommodation for women and children in Carnarvon and surrounding areas was recently inspected by Housing and Works Minister Tom Stephens.
The new refuge is a joint project of the Carnarvon Family Support Service and the Department of Housing and Works.
During a visit to Carnarvon, the Minister said the building would comfortably provide live in accommodation for up to 12 people and accommodate five staff.
It illustrated the Government's commitment to delivering appropriate short-term accommodation services for women and children escaping domestic and family violence.
Mr Stephens said the capital funding had come from the department's Crisis Accommodation Program, following a submission to its Community Housing Branch.
"This new facility is a fine example of partnerships involving the State Government and the community," he said.
"The refuge will provide more appropriate accommodation for victims of domestic violence. Women and children using the new facilities can live as family units with a degree of privacy, and virtually self-contained."
The building was designed by architect Franco Carozzi, and built by JC Schleicher and F Graham of Kalbarri.
The new facilities include five bedrooms, office, counselling room, carer's room, kitchen-dining room, two bathrooms, laundry and a storeroom.
Mr Stephens said Carnarvon Family Support Services would assume responsibility for the ongoing management of the refuge.
