A package of extended hours, for the 2004-2005 Christmas/New Year period, has been approved by Consumer and Employment Protection Minister John Kobelke.
Mr Kobelke said additional trading was always provided in the lead-up to Christmas.
"Due to Christmas and New Year's Days falling on Saturday this year, trading will be permitted on the public holidays of December 28 and January 3," he said.
"To have required general retail shops to be closed for six out of ten days, in the busiest time of the year, would have been detrimental to both consumers and traders."
The Minister said the variations applied to general retail shops in the Perth metropolitan area including those in the Perth and Fremantle tourism precincts.

The extensions will not apply to general shops in the City of Rockingham or the localities of Two Rocks and Yanchep, where specific extended trading Orders are to remain in force.
Small Shops (Exempted General Retail Shops) and Special Shops are able to trade each day of the year.
The extensions do not apply to motor vehicle dealers.
