Coastwest boost to WA's Coastal and Marine Environments
15/8/03
More than $500,000 has been allocated by the State Government to fund 35 projects under the new Coastwest Grants Program.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the new program would help in protecting and repairing precious marine and coastal areas along the coast of Western Australia.
"Coastwest grants provide opportunities and resources for local community members to play an active role in maintaining and enhancing their local coastal environment," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The Gallop Government has renewed its commitment to the marine environment, following the end of the Commonwealth Government's participation in the joint Coastwest/Coastcare program."
Ms MacTiernan said the successful projects covered a wide and varied range.
"One project involves a long-term community turtle-monitoring program on Ningaloo coast," she said.
"The World Wildlife Fund Australia, the Department of Conservation and Land Management, the Cape Conservation Group and researchers from Murdoch University will work with industry and user groups, indigenous communities and pastoral leaseholders for the protection and conservation of marine turtles.
"Another project funds the collection of baseline data to evaluate the health of fish stocks in Albany's Princess Royal Harbour.
"Other projects will result in dune rehabilitation or new fencing, pathways and facilities at popular beaches to better manage public access and impact on the environment."
