Comedian's portrayal offensive to Aboriginals: Minister
24/4/03
Indigenous Affairs Minister Alan Carpenter today criticised comedian Louis Beers, saying his portrayal of Aboriginal character 'King Billy Cokebottle' was damaging and offensive to indigenous people.
"The drunken, swearing King Billy Cokebottle character is perpetuating an ugly Aboriginal stereotype that is clearly upsetting to indigenous people," Mr Carpenter said.
"Mr Beers' King Billy Cokebottle character was around in the 1980's.
"If his shows in 2003 are the same as those he performed in the '80's, then they will be just as offensive today to Aboriginal people as they were twenty years ago.
"It's time we all moved on."
